Snap!

Snap! is a German Eurodance group formed in 1989 by producers Michael Munzing and Luca Anzilotti. The original lineup featured Luca Anzilotti, Michael Munzing, Penny Ford and Turbo B. In 1990, they came to prominence with "The Power", which reached #2 in Native Germany and in the States. It would take #1 on the UK singles chart as well as both the Canada and US dance chart. The debut album, "World Power" included follow-ups "Ooops up", a re-working of the Gap Band's "I Don't Believe You Want to Get Up and Dance (Ooops!)", "Cult of Snap" and "Mary had a little boy". (Penny Ford was a backing singer for the Gap Band). "Ooops Up" and "Mary had a little boy" were also Canada Dance #1s. In between albums, the "Snap! Megamix" hit the UK top 10 in 1991.
For the second album, "The madman's return", Thea Austin joined the line-up as a singer/songwriter. "Colour of love" was the actual lead single whilst a German top 10 hit, it failed to make the UK Top 40. "Rhythm is a dancer" was a different story. It spent 6 weeks at #1 on the UK singles chart as well #1 on both the Canada and US Dance charts in 1992. Follow-up singles featuring Niki Harris, "Exterminate" and "Do you see the light" made the UK Top 10 in 1993.
The third album, "Welcome to Tomorrow" featured the vocals of Summer (Paula Brown).

What happened next?
In 1996, Snap! officially disbanded after releasing a greatest hits compilation called "Snap! Attack: The Best of Snap!". In 2000, the group made a surprise return in 2000 with "Gimme a thrill" with Turbo B and vocals from Maxayn. Plaything remixed "Do you see the light" and that reached UK#14 in 2002. It reached #11 on the German dance chart. "Rhythm is a dancer" has been remixed in 2003 (UK#17) and in 2008 (UK#23). The 2003 version of "The Power (of Bhangra 2003)" made UK#34.

SL2

SL2 are an English breakbeat hardcore group consisting of Matt "Slipmatt" Nelson, John "Lime" Fernandez and rap vocalist Jason "Jay-J" James. They also recorded, remixed or produced. They are best known for "On a ragga tip" and "DJs take control." The name SL2 came from the initials of their names, Slipmatt and Lime. They started in the rave scene, running pirate stations, Awesome FM and Raw FM. After problems with their original label, created their own 'Awesome Records' label, where they released appropriately named "DJ's take control." A larger label, XL Recordings took note and gave SL2 commercial success. Jo Millett (who later produced her own music) and Kelly Overett (who would later go on to be a member of the Italian Eurodance act Cappella) joined as dancers for live shows and videos.

What happened next?
SL2 split up in 1993 after some internal disagreements. After remix of "On a ragga tip" returned SL2 charts, Slipmatt and Lime made up even though no new material has been released since.

Skee-lo

Antoine Roundtree better known as Skee-Lo is an American born (Mar 5) singer/rapper. Best known for the title track of his only album, "I wish". The song uses a horn sample from Bernard Wright's "Spinnin'." Another hit "Top of the Stairs" was featured in the ending credits as well as the soundtrack to the 1995 film Money Train.

What happened next?
Skee-Lo quietly 'retired' from rapping five months after the album's release because of a dispute with label Sunshine Records. Skee-Lo claimed the label took all the credit from the album's success, and he did not make a single cent from it. He said "So I refused to shoot any more videos, promote or record music. I’m not their slave. I wasn’t working for free."
After many years he eventually won the rights against the label in court.

Simply Red

Simply Red is an English soul and pop band formed in Manchester in 1984 by lead vocalist (and songwriter) Mick "Red" Hucknall with three former members of the band Durutti Column: bassist Tony Bowers, drummer Chris Joyce, and keyboardist/brass player Tim Kellett, plus guitarist Sylvan Richardson and keyboardist Fritz McIntyre. The band line up changed over the years. By 1996, after their fifth album "Life", Mick Hucknall was the only remaining original member and the name Simply Red had become a trademark for him.
The 90s was arguably when Simply Red at their peak with three UK #1 albums, "Stars", "Life" and "Blue". They had 6 top 10 hits including the UK #1 hit, "Fairground," which heavily sampled Goodmen's "Give it up" and whose video was filmed in Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

What happened next?
Simply Red After being dropped by their label EastWest in 2000, they established a website simplyred.com which also became their own label and released the album "Home" in 2003 and all subsequent releases under it. Hucknall retired the name Simply Red after a farewell tour in 2010, but reunited in 2015 for a tour that marked the 30th anniversary of the band, and released the album "Big Love". In 2021, Mick Hucknell is bringing back Simply Red for the Blue-Eyed Soul Uk and Europrean tour.

Shola Ama

Shola Ama is an English born (Mar 8) singer who best known for her version of Randy Crawford's "You might need someboday" and the UK top 3 hit, "You're the one I love". Shola was discovered singing to herself ona platform at a London tube station and on her 16th birthday signed a recording contract. Her debut single was "You're the one I love" was failed to chart. However, the next song was Turley Richards penned "You might need somebody" and that reached #4 in the UK. The re-issue of "You're the one I love" gave Shola her biggest hit when it reached #3 in August 1997. Other hits (including the title track) from her debut album, "Much love" followed. She collaborated with Glamma Kid on "Taboo" (based on Sade's "Sweetest Taboo") and spent 1 week at #1 on UK Dance Chart in April 1999.

Shawn Christopher

Shawn Christopher is an American born singer. She started as backing singer for the great Chaka Khan and was lead on the vocalised mixes of L'il Louis' "French Kiss". In the 1990s, she had 2 dance chart #1s in the US with "Another Sleepless Night" in 1991 and "Sweet Freedom" in 1998. She nipped into the UK Top 40 with "Don't lose the magic" but she possibly best known for the song "Make my love" in 1995.

Shanice

Shanice Lorraine Wilson-Knox or just Shanice is an American born (May 14) singer–songwriter, actress and dancer. She is best known for international hit, "I love your smile". Before becoming famous, Shanice was nine years old when she appeared in a Kentucky Fried Chicken commercial with the legendary jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald. "I love your smile" was the lead single from her second album, "Inner Child" and would reach #2 in both the US behind George Michael/Elton John's "Don't let the sun go down on me" and the UK behind Shakespeare's Sister's "Stay". According to the midweek charts, ITV chart show in March 1992, she did unoffically reach #1 (although video shows her dropping back to #2)

. Shanice would have more success back in the States with "Silent Prayer" featuring Johnny Gill reaching #31 and "Saving forever for you" reaching #4 in 1992. Her last hit in the States was "When I close my eyes" when it made #12 in 1999.

Shania Twain

Eilleen Regina Edwards better known as Shania Twain is a Canadian born (Aug 28) singer and songwriter. Her success garnered her several honorific titles including the "Queen of Country Pop." While Billboard named her as the leader of the '90s country-pop crossover stars. She is best known for the ballad, "You're still the one," "That don't impress me much" and "Man! I feel like a woman." After a quiet self-titled debut album in 1993, her second effort, "The woman in me" (1995) gained success in native Canada and in the States. In Canada alone, her first six singles all reached #1 on Canada Country Music chart. Four of those went to #1 on the US Country Chart. "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" and "Any Man of Mine" were released together and peaked at #31 on the US chart. Her third album, "Come on over" had similar success in spawning five singles reaching #1 on Canada Country chart. But this time, the album was an international hit. "You're still the one" was her breakthrough song into the UK chart, reaching #10 and got to #2 on the US chart. Her five top 20 hits in the UK came from "Come on over"

What happened next?
Shania Twain continued her success with her fourth album, "Up". She reached #1 on the main Canada chart (remarkably her only #1 in Canada) with "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!". This reached #4 in the UK in 2002. "Ka-Ching" (#8) and "Forever and for always" (#6) also reached the UK Top 10 in 2003. She most recently collaborated with Ronan Keating on "Forever and ever, Amen" for his album, "Twenty Twenty". Shania has go on to sold over 100 million records, making her the best-selling female artist in country music history and among the best-selling music artists of all time. She has made numerous appearances on TV in states such as Dancing with the Stars, RuPaul's Drag Race, Drop the Mic, Lip Sync Battle and the Voice UK. She also dabbled in bit of acting when appearing in the 2019 film, Trading Paint with John Travolta and the 2020 biopic for Jeremy Camp.

Shamen

Shamen are a Scottish dance group consisting of founder members Colin Angus (Aug 24), Derek McKenzie (Feb 27) and Keith McKenzie (Aug 30). Peter Stephenson joined shortly after to take over on keyboards from Angus. When Mr C (Richard West) joined, the band moved on to international commercial success with "Move any mountain", "Ebeneezer Goode" and their 1992 Boss Drum album.
"Move any mountain" was one of four #1 hits on the US Dance chart. Others being "Make it mine", "LSI" and "Phorever people".

Shamencontinued recording into the late 1990s, releasing two additional albums, "Hempton Manor" and "UV" with an increasingly experimental style. The group disbanded in 1999. Mr C has since continued as a house music DJ and became a nightclub owner of The End club. As of 2007, he was also recording as a member of Sycophant Slags, with Adultnapper (Francis Harris). Colin Angus worked on a project called Pablo Sandoz, from 2004 to 2008.

Shaggy

Orville Richard Burrell better known as Shaggy is a Jamaican born (Oct 22) reggae singer/rapper. He is best known for UK #1 and international hits, "Oh Carolina" and "Boombastic". His debut single, "Oh carolina" was a cover version of the Folkes Brothers (1960) reached #1 in the UK in March 1993. It featured numerous samples including Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn Theme," James Brown "make it funny" and "Get on the good foot", "Looney Tunes" also spent 1 week at #1 on Canada Dance Chart in July 1993. Shaggy followed up with a top 5 hit Mungo Jerry's "In the summertime" featuring Rayvon. "Boombastic" sampled King Floyd's "Baby Let Me Kiss You" (1971) and based on the Levi's Jeans TV ad campaign at the time, reached #1 in the UK. "Boombastic" these days is a go-to song when you want some sexy music in a TV show or movie. It reached #3 in the states (as a double A side with "In the summertime").

Shaft

Shaft is the only act (to my recollection) that had UK Top 10 hits as two completely different entities. The first incarnation of Shaft comprised of Mark Pritchard and Adrian Hughes. They are best known for making a rave version of the "Roobarb and Custard" theme tune in 1991.

The second incarnation of Shaft was another electronica dance group comprising of Alex Rizzo and Elliot Ireland. They are best known for their mixes of "(Mucho Mambo) Sway".

What happened next?
Presumably the first incarnation of Shaft disbanded long before the second incarnation, otherwise they wouldn't be called Shaft. Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel or just plain old Seal is an English born (Feb 19) soul/pop singer who is best known for the vocals on Adamski's "Killer", "Crazy", "Kiss from a rose" from the 1995 movie, 'Batman Forever' and Steve Miller Band's "Fly like an eagle" from the 1996 movie, 'Space Jam'.

Scatman John

John Paul Larkin better known as Scatman John is an American born (Mar 13) musician and is best known combining eurodance and the art of scatting, most notably on the UK Top 3 and Canada Dance #1 hit, "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)". Scatman John legitimately had a stutter and this interview and performance illustrates his talent.

Sash!

Sash! is a German dance music project created by DJ Sascha Lappessen Sash! is best known for his dance/trance/eurohouse crossover hits, "Encore Une Fois" (featuring Sabine Ohmes), "Ecuador" (featuring Rodriguez), "Stay" (La Trec and "Mysterious Times" (featuring Tina Cousins) all unluckily reaching UK#2. The project had the most #2 hits without reaching #1 in the UK in the 90s. However "Encore une fois" reached #1 on the UK and US Dance charts. Both "Ecuador" and "Stay" reached #1 on the Canada and US Dance charts.

Sandy B

Sandy Barber or just Sandy B is an American born dance music singer. Best known for "Make the world go round" which released multiple times and was #1 on US Dance chart when originally released in 1996. It made #1 on the UK Dance chart on 2 separate occassions based on different mixes in November 1997 and February 1998. Sandy B also had another US Dance #1 with "Ain't no need to hide."

Salt-N-Pepa are an American hip-hop group consisting of Cheryl "Salt" James (Mar 28), Sandra "Pepa" Denton (Nov 9) and Spinderlla. Early on Spinderella was Pamela Latoya Greene but was replaced by Deidra "Spin" Roper (Aug 3).

In 2021, Lifetime released a Salt-N-Pepa biopic, which starred GG Townson as Salt, Laila Odom as Pepa, Monique Jasmine Paul as DJ Spinderella, Cleveland Berto as Herbie, Daniel Keith Morrison as MC Hammer, Denver Taylor as Martin Lawrence, Bronson Phillip Lake as Christopher "Kid" Reid, and Devante Senior as Christopher "Play" Martin. Salt-N-Pepa served as the executive producers while Queen Latifah served as a producer and Mario Van Peebles as director.

Sagat

Sagat is a moniker used by American rapper Faustin Maxim Moran Lenon. He is best known for the underground hit "Funk dat" or as I call the "Why is it..." rant! A cleaner version for radio was released and eventually made the top 40 in the UK. It was never established whether his name was garnered from the Street fighter character of the same name.

Sagat released an album called "My Poem Is... The World According To Sagat" which included "Funk dat" and other singles "Get Outta My Face" and "Luvstuff". Sabrina Johnston

Sabrina Marie Johnston or just Sabrina Johnston is an American born singer. Best known for the songs "Peace" and "Friendship".

RuPaul

RuPaul Andre Charles or just RuPaul is an American born (Nov 17) actor, drag queen, model, and singer-songwriter, who first gained fame in the 1990s when he appeared in a wide variety of television programs, films, and musical albums. RuPaul hit the topspot on US Dance chart with "Back to my roots" and "A shade shady (Now Prance)" in 1993. Arguably the more notable dance track would be the debut single "Supermodel (You better work), which reached #2 on the US Dance chart in 1992 and #39 in the UK in 1993.

Ruffneck

Ruffneck is an American house music group consisting of record producers Dwayne Richardson, Derek Jenkins and Shaheer Williams. They are best known for the dance track "Everybody be somebody", which was based on a sample from "Bostich" by the Swiss synthpop band Yello. It spent three weeks at #1 on the US Dance chart in September 1995 and one week at #1 on Canada Dance Chart in January 1996. Other songs included "Move your body" (1996) and "All that Jazz" (1997). The featured vocalist on all their chart entries was Joanne "Yavahn" Thomas.

What happened next?
Tragically, Yavahn died of colon cancer in 2003 and consequently as a tribute Ruffneck a couple of previously unreleased tracks, "Music to my ears" (2004) and "Get it Right" (2005). Not a lot of activity since 2005.

Ruff Driverz

Ruff Driverz was the dance music outfit comprising of English DJ and remixers Brad Carter and Chris Brown. The duo also recorded under the names 2000BC and Transit. They worked with Katherine "Arrola" Ellis (credited as "Ruff Driverz Presents Arrola") on the flamenco-inspired "Dreaming" and the "La Musica". The former being their biggest UK hit reaching the top 10 and spending a total of 2 weeks at #1 on UK Dance Chart in December 1998. Their debut single, "Don't stop" also reached #1 on the UK Dance Chart in February 1998. Their last single whilst only reaching #37 in the UK, got all the way to #2 on the US Dance chart.

Unfortunately nothing new of note from Ruff Driverz since 1999. However, the duo have also recorded material under the names 2000BC and Transit.Ruff Driverz. Katherine Ellis has been featured artist with the Freemasons, Dave Lee/Joey Negro, Roger Sanchez and Cerrone. She has also done some TV advert work as well.

Rozalla

Rozalla Miller or just Rozalla is Zambian born (Mar 18) singer. She is best known for the international dance hit "Everybody's free (to feel good)". Currently her only UK Top 10 hit, it also reach the top of the US Dance chart in 1992 as did "Are you ready to fly?". Rozalla also released the old O'Jays song "I love music", which was featured on the Al Pacino movie, "Carlito's way". This reached #1 on both the US and Canada dance charts.

In 2015, Rozalla returned to the Top 10 of the Billboard Club Dance Charts for the first time since 1994 with her track "If You Say It Again". This was quickly followed by the single 'Shadows of the Moon'. In recent times, Rozalla released "I feel it slippy away" in 2020 and is itching to do a few shows once COVID restrictions are lifted. Very recently, she released and has been promoting the song "I want you back"

Roxette

Roxette was a Swedish pop rock duo, consisting of Marie Fredriksson (born May 30) (vocals and keyboards) and Per Gessle (born Jan 12) (vocals and guitar). They came to prominence just before 90s with "The Look" and their multi-hit album "Look Sharp!" They continued their success well into the 90s with the "Pretty Woman" ballad, "It must have been love" (UK#3) and the reissue of "Listen to your heart" (UK#) . Both songs were #1 in the States. Upon release of their third album, "Joyride", the title track was nother US #1 as well making the top 5 in the UK. Roxette scored 18 top 40 hits in the UK in the 1990s.

What happened next?
Roxette continued to release singles and albums throughout the 2000s and 2010s where they remained successful in their native Sweden. Roxette stopping recording new material and limited touring in 2016 cancelling their European tour, mostly due Freriksson's health.
Marie Fredriksson died on 9 December 2019, at the age of 61, following a long battle with a brain tumour. The day of her death, the music video for "It Must Have Been Love", posted on Roxette's official YouTube channel, had reached over 430 million views. Paying tribute to Fredriksson after her death, Gessle said she was "an outstanding musician, a master of the voice, an amazing performer." An album of previously unreleased outtakes, Bag of Trix, will be issued in December 2020. An outtake from the Good Karma sessions, "Let Your Heart Dance with Me" was released on 2 October. It was one of the final songs Fredriksson recorded before her death.

Rosie Gaines

Rosie Gaines is an American born (Jun 26) singer who is best known for "Closer than close" as solo artist and was a member of prince's group, the New Power Generation. She duetted with Prince on the US R&B #1, US Top 3 hit and title track from said album, "Diamonds and Pearls". "Closer Than Close" itself reached #4 on the UK chart as it also spent 1 week at #1 on UK Dance Chart in June 1997.

What happened next?

Robin S

Robin Stone or just Robin S is an American born (Apr 27) house music singer and songwriter, best known for the dance hits "Show me love" and "Luv 4 luv". Both reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1993 as did "It must be love" in 1997.

Robert Palmer

Robert Allan Palmer or just Robert Palmer was an English born (Jan 19) pop-rock vocalist, songwriter and musician. He started as a member of supergroup, Power Station and biggest solo hit was "Addicted to Love". In the 1990s, he is best known for his collaboration with UB40 on Bob Dylan's "I'll be your baby tonight" and his version of Marvin Gaye's "Mercy mercy me - I want you". Both from the album, "Don't Explain" and both UK Top 10 hits.

Robert Owens

Robert James Owens (or just Robert Owens) is an American born (Aug 16) singer, songwriter and record producer. He was a member of the Chicago house group Fingers Inc in the mid-1980s. He is best known for the house anthem "I'll be your friend", which was #1 on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1992. The song was remixed numerous times and eventually hit the UK Top 40 in 1997.

Robert Miles

Robert Miles was a pseudonym used by Roberto Concina, a Swiss-born (Nov 3) Italian record producer, composer, musician and DJ. Born in Switzerland, his family returned to Italy when he was a boy to live in Fagagna. He spearheaded the "dream-house" sound in the mid-1990's with his worldwide hit single "Children" and the subsequent album "Dreamland". "Children" was #1 on the UK, US and Canada Dance charts. Follow-ups "Fable" and "One and One" featuring Maria Nayler also reached the top of the US Dance chart.

What happened next?
Robert Miles founded Salt Records and was managed by Gavino Prunas. Miles tragically died of pancreatic cancer in Ibiza, Spain, on 9 May 2017 at the age of 47. Miles’ Open Lab station was taken off-air shortly afterwards, pending discussions on the future of the station. After receiving many messages from people expressing dismay at the station's suspension, it was announced that the station would be returning soon in 2019 starting with a live radio stream in January 2019 followed by a reboot to radio on 106.4 FM in Ibiza in April 2019.

Right Said Fred

Love, shirt, Milan, New York, Japan, Party, car and hat were the things Right Said Fred were too sexy for. Right Said Fred are group formed by brother Richard and Fred Fairbrass. They were joined by Rob Mazoli in 1990. Their name came from the Bernard Cribbins 1962 song of the same name. Together, they are best known for the song "I'm too sexy", which spent 7 weeks at UK#2 behind Bryan Adams' "Everything I do" in 1991. "I'm too sexy" did spend 3 weeks on the top of US Billboard Hot 100 and the Canada Dance Chart in February 1992. Right Said Fred also collaborated with Jocelyn Brown on "Don't talk just kiss" and their only UK#1 was "Deeply Dippy" which spent 3 weeks at #1 in April 1992.
