"Various Artists" is usually name when a collective couldn't think of a name before, releasing their song for whatever reason. During the 1990s, there were 9 UK Top 40.
The most successful of these was a collection of artists covering Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" for the BBC as a charity single. It was one of the rare singles that had 2 spells at #1. Even rarer was that fact that it was #1 in both 1997 (2 weeks) and 1998 (1 week).
Performers on Perfect Day: Lou Reed, Bono, Skye Edwards (Morcheeba), David Bowie, Suzanne Vega, Elton John, Boyzone, Lesley Garrett, Burning Spear, Thomas Allen, Heather Small (M People), EmmyLou Harris, Tammy Wynette, Shane MacGowan, Dr John, Robert Cray, Huey Morgan (Fun Lovin' Criminials), Ian Broudie (Lightning Seeds), Gabrielle, Evan Dando (Lemonheads), Brett Anderson (Suede), Joan Armatrading, Laurie Anderson and Tom Jones.
Another successful was the megamix single for the BRITS award in 1990, which featured dance hits from the previous year including "Street Tuff" (Rebel MC/Double Trouble), "Voodoo Ray" (Guy called Gerald), "Theme from S'Express", "Hey DJ" (Beatmasters/Betty Boo), "War of the worlds" (Jeff Wayne), "Pacific State" (808 State), "We call it aciiid" (D-Mob) and "Got to keep on" (Cookie Crew).
