Ricky Martin

Enrique Martín Morales (better known as Ricky Martin) is Puerto Rican born (Dec 24) singer and producer. He is best known for the international hit "Livin' la Vida Loca", which was #1 in both the USA (5 weeks, May 1999) and UK (3 weeks, July 1999) as well as 2 weeks as Canada Dance #1. His breakout single, "Maria" made #1 in Australia and France. He also sung the World Cup Song in 1998, "La Copa de la Vida" (The Cup of Life).

Reel 2 Real

Reel 2 Real was an American musical project created by producer/DJ Erick Morillo. The project had seven top 10 hits on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in the 1990s. Reel 2 Real is best known for teaming up with Trinidadian toastmaster Mark Quashie (otherwise known as the Mad Stuntman) on "I like to move it". "I like to move it" was also a #1 on the Canada Dance chart in 1994 for 4 weeks. The follow-ups "Go on move" (1994) and "Can you feel it" (1995) also reached #1 on Canada Dance chart. All their UK Top 40 hits featured the Mad Stuntman. Reel 2 Real also scored a US Dance #1 with "The new anthem" in 1992. Reel 2 Real also teamed up with Barbara Tucker, Charlotte Small and Proyecto Uno.

What happened next?
Erick Morillo continued as successful international DJ and producer and work on the Subliminal/Da Mob project, which spawned the US Dance #1 hit, "Fun". He was arrested and charged sexual assault on a woman in 2020. A month later, he died of a drugs overdose at the age of 49. Mad Stuntman paid tribute. Mad Stuntman is still toasting to this day.

Rednex

Rednex is a Swedish eurodance music group, originally consisting of the lead singer Mary Joe (Annika Ljungberg), alongside Bobby Sue (Kent Olander), Ken Tacky (Arne Arstrand), Billy Ray (Jonas Nilsson) and Mup (Patrick Edenberg). They are best known for the novelty song "Cotton Eye Joe", which spent 3 weeks at #1 in the UK in January 1995. It was also #1 in most of Europe and #1 on the Canada Dance Chart. "Old Pop in an oak" and "Wish you were here" was successful reaching #1 in seeral countries in Europe. Although the latter failed to chart in 1995 in the UK.

What happened next?
"The spirit of the hawk" was #1 in Austria and Germany in 2000. Rednex have gone through numerous changes over the years and still do the retro/90s tour circuit.

Real McCoy

Real McCoy is a German Eurodance and pop music project that was collaboration between producers J.Wind (Jurgen Wind), QuickMix (Frank Hassas) and rapper O-Jay (Olaf Jeglitza). In the early days, George Shampro joined as MC Sar as a front for the group. However, it was O-Jay who actually did the rapping and presumably why MC Sar moniker was dropped. The female singer during their successful period was Patsy (Patricia Petersen) although Karin Kasar did supply vocalsThe album "Another Night" (called "Space Invaders" in Europe) spawned multiple dance hits with "Another Night" reaching #2 in the UK and #1 on both the Canada and US Dance Chart. "Runaway" and "Automatic Lover" were a couple more uptempo eurodance track. Their version of Redbone's "Come and get your love" reaching #1 on US Dance chart in 1995. The title track from their next album "One more time" reached #1 on the Canada Dance chart.

What happened next?
Real McCoy had a long hiatus from around 2000 to 2015. In that time, Real McCoy recorded a version of the La Tour song "People are still having sex". In 2016, O-Jay returned again as Real McCoy with the original studio singer Karin Kasar. As a live duo act, O-Jay and Kasar perform as Real McCoy at '90s festivals worldwide.

Prodigy

The Prodigy are an English electronic dance music band formed in 1990 by keyboardist and songwriter Liam Howlett. The band's line-up has included MC and vocalist Maxim, dancer and vocalist Keith Flint (until his death in March 2019), dancer and live keyboardist Leeroy Thornhill (who left to pursue a solo career in 1999), and dancer and vocalist Sharky (1990–1991). Along with the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy are credited as pioneers of the breakbeat-influenced genre big beat, which achieved mainstream popularity in the 1990s. Howlett's rock-inspired drum rhythms infused with electronic rave music beats/breaks were combined with Maxim's omnipresent mystique, Thornhill's shuffle dancing style and Flint's modern punk appearance. They are known for sampling many songs into their hits. They emerged from the early underground rave scene to have hits with UK Top 3 hits, "Charly" and "Everybody in the place" as featured on debut album, "Experience". They achieved UK #1 hits and international recognition for "Firestarter" and "Breathe" from the album, "The fat of the land". It also featured the UK Dance #1, "Smack my bitch up."

On 10 February 2021, The Prodigy announced their plans to begin production on a documentary film about the band's history, with a now unknown title and release date. It will be directed by long time collaborator Paul Dugdale and produced by Pulse Films.

Prince

Prince Rogers Nelson or just Prince is an American born (Jun 7) singer, musician, songwriter, composer, arranger, sound engineer, producer, actor, dancer. Frontman of Prince And The Revolution (from 1984 to 1986). And from 1991 onwards he was Leader of the New Power Generation. In the 1990s, he was arguably best known for some provocative/controversial songs such as US Dance #1 "Get Off" and "Sexy MF". "Controversy" itself was UK Top 5 hit. He spent 2 weeks as US #1 with "Cream" in 1991 and scored his only UK charttopper to date with "Most beautiful girl in the world" in 1994. In 1993, he notably changed his name from Prince to (symbol) (or the Artist formerly known as Prince). As 1999 approached, the song "1999" was re-released and was a UK Dance #1.

What happened next?
Prince changed labels and returned to using his name, Prince in 2000. He continued to release successful singles and albums. Tragically, Prince passed away on April 21, 2016.

Portishead

Portishead are an English band named after the town they originated from and consisted Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley. THey sometimes cited a fourth member Dave McDonald, an engineer on their early records. They are best known for the 1995 Mercury award winning album "Dummy", which featured the songs "Glory Box" and "Sour Times". Their biggest UK hit came from their self-titled second album called "All mine."

PM Dawn

PM Dawn is an American hip hop and R&B act that formed in 1988 by the brothers Attrell Cordes (Prince Be the Nocturnal) and Jarrett Cordes (DJ Minutemix). They are best known for the song "Set adrift on memory bliss" that sampled Spandau Ballet's "True" and reached #1 in the States and on Canada Dance chart in 1991.

What happened next?
PM Dawn changed lineup in 2005 when their cousin Dr Giggles (Doc G) was added, right after which Jarrett was fired from the band. It was later revealed that Attrell suffered from a few strokes and that his health status does not allow him to continue with the band. Attrell died at the age of 46 on June 17th 2016, due to complications from his diabetes. Their cousin Doc G has practically "inherited" the PM Dawn flag, and is touring as PM Dawn performing their songs. On April 6, 2018, Doc.G announced K-R.O.K. as a new member of P.M. Dawn.

Playahitty

Italian project created by producer Emanuele Asti who also wrote the songs in collaboration with Stefano Carrara. The voice of Playahitty was performed by Giovanna Bersola AKA Jenny B and lipsync performed on stage and in the videos by models called Marion, Sandra & Gabrielle. Their biggest hit was, indisputably, "The Summer Is Magic".

PJ & Duncan & Stakka Bo

Here look at a couple of acts who had a brief pop career before going on to far bigger things.

First is PJ & Duncan who were alias for characters on the BBC TV children's series "Byker Grove." PJ was portrayed by Anthony David McPartlin (Nov 18) and Duncan by Joseph Oliver "Dec" Donnelly (Sep 25). They were then known for the UK Top 10 hit, "Let's Get Ready To Rhumble." Their last UK top 40 hit, "Stepping Stone" was a cover of Paul Revere and The Raiders.

PJ and Duncan reverted to their real names Ant & Dec and have become a much loved double act in the UK and recently won best TV presenter at the NTA for the 20th time. By popular demand, they re-released "Let's get ready to rhumble" and that reached #1 in the UK in 2013. Meanwhile, Stakka Bo reverted to his real name Johan Renck and is most notable for winning awards for directing Chernobyl.

Phats & Small

Phats & Small are a British electronic dance music duo formed in Brighton, in 1998, and composed of Jason "Phats" Hayward and Russell Small. They are best known for their single "Turn Around", which was #1 on the UK Dance Chart and became an international hit in 1999.

PF Project / Tzant

PF Project short for Party Faithful Project was project created by Jamie White and Moussa Clarke. Together they are best known collaborating with Ewan McGregor on "Choose Life" from the 1997 movie "Trainspotting". They released one other single with Roachford called "Walk away" in 1999. PF Project pair also were part of the outfit known as Tzant, which had UK Dance #1 with "Hot and Wet". They also recorded under the name, Mirrorball and reached #12 in the UK with "Given up".

Pet Shop Boys

Pet Shop Boys are an English synth-pop duo, formed in London in 1981 and consisting of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. They established themselves in the 1980s with #1 hits like "West End Girls", "It's a sin", "Always on my mind" and "Heart" and were part of the Second British Invasion.
In the 1990s, they are best known for the songs "So Hard" and the covers of U2's "Where the streets have no name" and Village People's "Go West." They were still popular in the states particular in the dance chart where they scored 5 #1 hits with "Can you forgive her?" (1993), "Go West" (1993), "Before" (1996), "To step aside" (1997) and "New York City Boy" (1999).

What happened next?
Pet Shop Boys released their fourteenth studio album, "Hotspot" in 2020. Their last UK Top 40 hit was "Did you see me coming?" in 2009 (reached #21). Altogether they have achieved 42 Top 30 singles, 22 of them Top 10 hits in the UK Singles Chart and 4 chart-toppers. They scored their 11th US Dance Club Play #1 with "The Pop Kids" in 2016. They recently collaborated with Years and Years on the track "Dreamland" who then returned the favour by singing "It's a sin." In December 2016, Billboard magazine listed them among the 100 Top Dance Club Artists of All Time (as 5th).

Peter Andre

Peter James Andre or just Peter Andre is an English born (Feb 27) singer, although he spent his early years living in Australia. He is best known for his abs, the song "Mysterious Girl" and the UK #1 hits "Flava" and "I feel you".

Paul Van Dyk

Matthias Paul better known as Paul Van Dyk is a German born (Dec 16) Trance DJ and producer. He is best known for trance track, "For an angel", which spent 2 weeks at #1 on the UK Dance chart in September 1998. The follow up, "Another way" also reached #1 on the UK Dance chart in November 1999.

What happened next?
Paul Van Dyk has won a string of awards, from 1998 until 2011. He was nominated for/won over 65 titles for his work as a DJ and music producer, such as those from "DJ", "Ministry" (of Sound), "Mixmag", and "Muzik". Readers of Muzik voted his resident 6-hour sets at the Sheffield club "Gatecrasher" as the "second best club night ever". That same year at the Music Awards in London, he received the "Best International DJ Award". He moved up in DJ’s annual list of the "Top 100 DJ's Worldwide", where he was voted as number 1 DJ of the world in 2005. His singles "Tell Me Why (The Riddle)" and "We Are Alive" reached number 1 on the dance charts in several countries. His most recent release was "First contact", a collaboration with Kinetica.

Paul Oakenfold / Perfecto / Grace

Paul Oakenfold is an English born (Aug 30) DJ, mixer and producer. He has had a numerous projects under monkiers such as Grace, Movement 98 and Perfecto (Allstarz and Planet). In 1990, Oakenfold went under the pseudonym of "Movement 98" and had UK Top hit with "Joy and Heartbreak" featuring Caroll Thompson. In 1995, he produced the UK Dance #1 track "Reach up (Papa's Got A Brand New Pig Bag)" as the Perfecto Allstarz" and later that year, he put together the group Grace with Dominique Atkins on vocals and co-producer Steve Osborne and they had a UK and US Dance #1 with "Not over yet". Oakenfold returned had another Perfecto UK Dance #1 with "Bullet in the Gun" in 1999.

Paul Oakenfold produced the track used for the tv show "Big Brother" under the name Element 4, which coincidently made #4 on the UK chart. Oakenfold continued success with the Planet Perfecto with "Bullet in the Gun" when it made #7 on remix. Oakenfold had a few hits in 2002 and 2003 under his name including "Starry eyed surprise" (UK#7) with Crazy Town's Shifty on vocals and "Faster Kill Pussycat" (UK#6) with the late Brittany Murphy on vocals.

Paul Johnson

Paul Leighton Johnson or (just Paul Johnson) is an American born house DJ and producer. He is best known for his self-taught DJ style of house music and his 1999 single "Get Get Down", which became a worldwide hit, reaching #5 in the UK and #1 on the US Dance chart.

Paula Abdul

Paula Julie Abdul or just Paula Abdul is an American born (Jun 19) singer, songwriter, dancer, choreographer and actress. She began her career in Los Angeles as a choreographer for music videos. Inevitably, she moved on to making music videos of her own. After having a successful debut album, "Forever your girl," that success continued into 90s with the last single from the album, "Opposites attract" reaching #2 in the UK and #1 in the states on the Canada Dance chart. A remix of "Knocked out" coincidenced with a full remix album, "Shut up and dance" and reached #21. Her second studio album, "Spellbound" had its lead off single, "Rush Rush" reach #6 in the UK. This and "The promise of a new day" were both US #1s. Her last UK top 40 hit (also a US Dance #1), "My love is for real" was the lead single from her third album, "Head over heels."

After the third album, "Head over heels", Paula Abdul has maintained a much lower musical profile since. Outhere Brothers

Outhere Brothers are an American hip-house duo from Chicago, Illinois, consisting of lyricist Keith "Malik" Mayberry and producer/remixer Lamar (Hula) Mahone. They are primarily known for their hit singles "Don't Stop (Wiggle Wiggle)", "Boom Boom Boom" and "La La La Hey Hey". The former two songs were UK#1 hits, whilst the latter two songs were #1 on the Canada Dance chart.

Orbital

Orbital is a Techno outfit, founded in the late 80s by the brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll. Their name is taken from the London's orbital motorway, the M25, which they were brought up nearby (in Sevenoaks). They are best known for the debut single, "Chime" and the top 3 hits "Satan Live" and "The Saint". They came to attention in 1994 when they won an NME award for Vibes Best Dance Act early in 1994 and made a headline appearance at the Glastonbury Festival on 25th June 1994. It wasn't until 1997 though when a live version of "Satan" was released. They contributed to multiple film soundtracks (Event Horizon, Spawn and The Saint). The theme to the Saint was reworked and made #3.

Orb

The Orb is a Long-running UK electronic group, originally formed by Jimmy Cauty (of The KLF) and Alex Paterson in 1988, that grew out of a love of ambient music and dub, soundscapes and science fiction. Due to the early work in this style, The Orb became pioneers of the early-90's-born "ambient house" genre. They are perhaps best known for the UK Top 10 hit, "Little fluffy clouds" in 1993. They had bigger hits with "Blue Room" in 1992 and "Toxygene" in 1997.

What happened next?
The Orb's lineup has shifted over the years, with Alex being the only consistent member. Notable members include Thrash and Thomas Fehlmann. Though he was never officially a member, Youth (Martin Glover) was instrumental throughout the group's existence, and co-owned the label WAU! Mr. Modo Recordings with Alex (they had known each other since they were young, and Alex was a roadie for the group Killing Joke, in which Youth played bass).

Opus III

Opus III was an English electronic music and progressive house group comprising of producers Kevin Dodds, Ian Munro and Nigel Walton with Kirtsy Hackshaw on vocals. They had changed their name from A.S.K. as Kirsty joined the group. They are best known in the UK for a song originally sung by Jane (Jane Lancaster) in 1985 called "It's a fine day". This was a US Dance #1 in August 1992 and the track "When you made the mountain" also reached the top of the dance charts in 1994.

What happened next?
"It's fine day" was re-released three times over the years by Kirsty Hackshaw, with Mike Koglin in 2002, with Kinky Roland in 2008 and "Fine Day 2K19". Kirtsy Hackshaw is still making music, last release was "Love is all we need" with Oona Dahl in 2020.

OMC

Otara Millionaires Club (or OMC) was a New Zealand group. Originally consisted of Phil, Christina and Pauly Fuemana, Pauly took the group forward working with Alan Jansson. From that, OMC scored the international hit, "How Bizarre."

What happened next?
"how bizarre" raised a lot of eyebrows, especially from Pauly himself. So much so, it is believed that Dwayne Johnson may have borrowed that look, when he was the Rock in the WWE. OMC split so after but came together for one last release, 4 All Of Us, with actress Lucy Lawless in 2007 and the name was allowed to die after the end of that project. Pauly Fuemana passed away on 31 January, 2010.

Olive

Olive were an English band formed in 1995 by singer Ruth-Ann Boyle, keyboardist Tim Kellet and beat-master Robin Taylor-Firth. Kellet was a member of Simply Red for their first nine years, as well as an occasional collaborator with UK pop-soul band Lighthouse Family. Taylor-Firth was one of the original members of Nightmare on Wax. Boyle used to sing in local bands. She had not been singing professionally before Olive was formed. Kellet was playing at a gig in Portugal with Durutti Column where he came across Ruth's voice which he then sampled. He loved it so much he asked Durutti Column "who is the vocalist I'm making tape loops of?"
They are best known for the hit "You're Not Alone" charted at Number 1 in the UK official charts on May 17th 1997 for a total of 2 weeks, despite the original release on September 7th 1996 only reaching number 42 in the UK charts. The aptly name "Extra Virgin" was the title of Olive's debut album and contained the UK#14 "Outlaw" which stopped them being a one #1 hit wonder. "Miracle" also on the album amazingly peaked twice at #41 on two separate releases.

What happened next?
In 2000, Olive released a second album, "Trickle", which featured a cover of 10cc's "I'm not in love", which reached #1 on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart. In 2009, Tinchy Stryder released a version of 'You're Not Alone', sparking new interest in Olive. A third album was in the works but never materialised. Boyle released the album, "What about us" in 2007.

Offshore

Offshore (or Off-Shore) was a dance project created by German DJs/Producers Jens Lissat and Peter Harder. They are best known for the UK Top 10 hit "I can't take the power", which samples Class Action's "Weekend" and Jocelyn Brown's "Love's Gonna Get You", together they make up the vocal sample. Amongst other songs released was another song featuring Jocelyn Brown, called "Got to get away" in 1991.

What happened next?

Oceanic

Oceanic are a English dance/rave act. They originally comprised of David Harry, Frank Crofts, Jorinde Williams. Oceanic are best known for the house/dance track "Insanity", which spent 3 weeks at #3 in August 1991 behind Bryan Adams' "Everything I do" and Right Said Fred's "I'm too sexy".

N-Trance

N-Trance are in English group consisting of Dale Longworth and Kevin O'Toole. The pair were two former sound engineering students and for the debut single, they drafted in college student Kelly Llorenna on vocals. The single was "Set you free" is their best known single. It was the case of third time lucky, as one first release it failed to chart. Second time, it scraped into the top 40 before finally reaching #2 in 1995. The follow-up, "Stayin' Alive" featuring Ricardo Da Force and heavily sampling the Bee Gees said song also reached #2 and was #1 on the Canada Dance chart in November 1995.

What happened next?
N-Trance continued to have hits with "Shake ya body" reaching UK#37 in 2000. In 2001, a fourth release of 'Set You Free', aided by a remix from Rob Searle made #4 in the UK. "Forever" reached UK#6 in 2002 and "Destiny" UK#37 in 2003. They did numerous remixes ranging from Divine Inspiration to Scooter, Trinity-X to Ultrabeat. In 2005, N-Trance embarked on another project, Freeloaders and with the Real Thing had #9 hit in the UK with "So much love to give". Kelly Llorenna went on to collaborate with Flip & Fill on "True love never dies" in 2001, which reached UK#7. She had another top ten with her version of Taylor Dayne's "Tell it to my heart" (UK #9 in 2002) and couple of top 20 hits with "Heart of Gold" and Donna Summer's "This time I know it's for real". Her last release was "Dress you up" in 2009.

No Mercy

No Mercy are an American group put together by German producer Frank Farian. The group consisted of Marty Cintron and twins Ariel and Gabriel Hernandez. They are best known for the internaional hit, a cover of La Bouche's "Where do you go?" which reached #1 on Canada Dance chart, #2 in the UK and #5 in the States in 1996/1997. A follow-up (not released in the UK) "When I die" reached #1 in Austria and Holland. "Please don't go" reached #4 in the UK and "Kiss you all over" reached #1 on the US Dance chart in 1998.

What happened next?

Nomad

Nomad is an English house music group and consisted of Damon Rochefort, Steve McCutcheon (Steve Mac) and Sharon D Clarke. The group was the brainchild of Damon (whose name backwards is Nomad). They are best known for their dance chart #1 and UK#2 hit "(I Wanna Give You) Devotion" and featured/credited MC Mikee Freedom in 1991. They had another top 20 hit with "Just a groove".

What happened next?
The band disbanded after the release of "24 Hours a Day" in 1992 for other projects. Damon Rochefort wrote songs for acts including Elton John, RuPaul, Bad Boys Inc. Michelle Gayle and Kim Wilde. After meeting Alomo’s Marks & Gran at a sitcom workshop, he got into script writing and wrote episodes for "Birds of Feather". This led to other projects like eventually for "Boyz R Us" and "Last Gasp" before going on to write for "Coronation Street". He also presented ITV's dance show, "BPM". He also wrote first theatrical piece "Live At Carnegie Hall" in association with The Royal Ballet, a tribute to Judy Garland which premiered at The Royal Opera House and toured the US and Australia.
Steve Mac became a record producer and songwriter of his own. He'd first be a member of the group Undercover but then striking a partnership with Wayne Hector co-wrote a number of chart songs. He has scored 30 UK #1 hits and has worked with musicians including Ed Sheeran, Melanie C, Pink, Westlife, Little Mix, to name a few. Sharon Dee Clarke went on to make a career primarily in TV/theatre and has won multiple Laurence Olivier Awards:

  • 2014: Best Actress in a Supporting Role (James Baldwin's The Amen Corner)
  • 2018: Best Actress in a Musical (Caroline, or Change)
  • 2020: Best Actress in a Play (Death of a Salesman)

NKOTB (New Kids On The Block)

New Kids On The Block (or NKOTB) is an American boyband consisting of Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, Jonathan Knight, Jordan Knight. They are perhaps considered the first big boy band when they got together in the late 1980s. They have the honour of being the first UK#1 of the 1990s when "Hangin' tough" reached the top after having "You got it" also reaching #1, a couple months earlier. Those were the only #1s in the UK. They continued to have success in the UK, ironically more so than back in the USA with 11 UK Top 40 hits in the 90s until 1994.

New Kids On The Block announced their split in 1994. Jordan Knight had a solo hit in the UK with "Give it to you" in 1999. The group reformed in 2008 and have toured on several revival tours.
