Cypress Hill

Cypress Hill is an American hip-hop band from SOuth Gate, California. The group formed when brothers Sen Dog (Senen Reyes) and Mellow Man Ace (Sergio Reyes) teamed up with DJ Muggs (Lawerence Muggerud) and B-Real (Louis Freese) in 1988. They named themselves DVX (Devastating Vocal Excellence). However, Mellow Man Ace launched a solo career and the group changed their name to Cypress Hill after a street in South Gate. During the start of the commercial success, Eric Bobo joined the crew.
The outfit is best known for "Insane in the brain", their lead single from their sophomore album, "Black Sunday". It was #1 on the US Rap chart. The album itself reached #1 on Billboard chart. It eventually reached #21 in the UK upon reissue. They had 9 UK Top 40 hits although slightly surprising none of them reached the Top 10 there.

What happened next?
Cypress Hill went on to achieve their biggest hit in the UK with "Rap Superstar / Rock Superstar" (UK#13 in April 2020). A couple more of UK Top 40 hits followed with "Can't Get The Best Of Me / Highlife" (UK#35 in Sep 2000) and "Lowrider / Trouble" (UK#33 in Dec 2001).
Their most recent studio album was the 9th one, "Elephants on acid" in 2018. In 2019, Cypress Hill became the first hip hop group to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Cypress Hill are currently promoting their new single, "Open ya mind" on their own label and a couple shows lined up in the middle of 2022.

Coldcut

Coldcut are an English electronic music duo composed of Matt Black and Jonathan More. Credited as pioneers for pop sampling in the 1980s, Coldcut are also considered the first stars of UK electronic. In the late 80s, they introduced us to Lisa Stansfield ("People hold on") nd Yazz ("Doctorin' the house") who both quickly as featured artists. They are also very known for remixing a variety of hip-hop and dance outfits. It is a little surprising that Coldcut only had one UK Top 40 in the 1990s but "More Beats and Pieces" did reach #1 on the UK Dance chart.

What happened next?
In 2020, Coldcut appeared on the global music/afrobeat album Keleketla! (with artists such as Tenderlonious, Tamar Osborn, Sibusile Xaba, Thabang Tabane and Tony Allen), which was released on their Ahead of Our Time Records label.

Clubland / Quartz

Clubland was a swedish house music act assembled in 1990 by BTECH label boss/producer Jan Ekholm and British duo Dave Rawlings and Ronnie Herel of Quartz. Morgan King joined them later as a songwriter. The act used a number of singers/rappers for the first album "Themes from Outer Clubland" including the American hip house duo 2 in a Room, British rapper Stepz, and Swedish singers Zemya Hamilton and Kayo Shekoni. In 1991, Ekholm reformed the act with singer Zemya Hamilton and musician Morgan King. They were particularly successful between 1990-1992, with three US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart toppers."Hold on" and "Set me free" were #1 on the Canada Dance chart.

What happened next?
Quartz went on to have success working with and introducing Dina Carroll, particularly with UK Top 10 cover of Carole King's "It's too late". Zemya Hamilton (Zemya Sylveta Larsson Auna) died on 24 December 2015 from multiple sclerosis, aged 50.
Of late Morgan has been writing and producing music which has featured on BBC, ITV, Films and most cable networks, with plans in the process to open a music library. He is also collaborating with new artists, building up a collective of musicians, writers, arrangers and producers to support him in his new solo releases...

China Black

China Black were an English pop-reggae duo, made up of Simon Fung (songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist and record producer) and Errol Reid (singer-songwriter). They are best known for the UK Top 5 hit, "Searching."

What happened next?
After a leagal battle within the record company and lengthy lawsuit, China Black decided to call it a day.
Fung turned his attention to songwriting and producing and worked with the likes of Blue, Atomic Kitten and Natasha Bedingfield as well doing TV and film work. Reid continues sing and write songs to this day and last releass was with Matt Samuels and Ridley on the 2021 track, "Now That We Found Love."

Chaka Demus & Pliers

Chaka Demus & Pliers are a Jamaican duo, consisting of DJ John Taylor (Chaka Demus) and singer Everton Bonner (Pliers). Both members were already established reggae musicians when they teamed up in the early 90s. They became the first Jamaican act to score three consecutive Top 5 hits on the UK Single Charts, including a rework of Top Notes' "Twist n Shout". They are known for one dancehall anthem, "Murder she wrote", which of course was around when Angela Lansbury drama of the same name.

Chaka Demus & Pliers performed at the BET Awards show in the reggae segment alongside Dawn Penn, Beenie Man and Elephant Man in 2013.
Oddly enough, Angela Lansbury only head "Murder she wrote" for first time in 2019, stating that she was thrilled to be part of reggae!
They still make the odd performance back in the Caribbean.

Chad Jackson

Mark Chadwick (better known as Chad Jackson) is an English born scratch/mix DJ, who won the 1987 DMC World DJ Mixing Championship and is best known commercially for the UK Top 3 hit, "Hear the drummer (Get Wicked)". The song sampled Public Enemy (vocals) and (horn loop).

Carl Cox

Carl Cox is renown English born (Jul 29) DJ and remixer who had 5 UK Top 40 hits, "I want you (forever)" being his best effort reaching #23 in 1991.

Candy Flip

Candy Flip were a English electronic music duo made of Danny Spencer and Ric Peet. They were associated with the indie dance "madchester" music scene in the early 1990s and are best known for their version of Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever", which reached #3 in the UK chart.

Blockster

Blockster was a dance project created by Brandon Block and both members of the production team, M&S, Ricky Morrison and Fran Sidoli. The project is best known for reworking and heavily sampling the Bee Gees' "You should be dancin'"

Bizz Nizz

Bizz Nizz was a Belgian dance act formed in 1989 by Jean-Paul de Coster of Antwerp. The project was best known for the European hit, "Don't miss the Party Line" which made the Top 10 in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Austria. Subsequent singles failed to chart.

Beverley Knight

Beverley Knight is an English born (Mar 22) soul singer from Wolverhampton. Her first single to hit the UK Top 40, "Flavour of the Old School" was a triumph for persistence as it reached only #50 on first release six months earlier. She started to get more recognition towards the end of the 90s, with a remix of "Made it back", which sampled Chic's "Good Times" and "Greatest Day" cracking the UK Top 20.

Beverley Knight went on to have 8 more UK Top 40 hits between 2001 and 2006 with "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" (UK#10, 2002) and "Come as you are" (UK#9, 2004) breaking into the Top 10.
Beverley has taken more to theatre, notably playing the lead, Rachel Marron in the Bodyguard musical and recently/currently in the lead in the Drifters Girl. Beverley is also set to be a judge on forthcoming 2022 singing show, "Starstruck"

BG Prince of Rap

Bernard Greene is an American rapper, who is best known for the US Dance #1 hit "This beat is hot" in 1991. Having been based in Germany after joining the US Army, he launched his career there with major Eurodance influences. "This beat is hot" reached #1 on the US Dance chart and the follow up "Take control of the party" made #2 in 1991. "The color of my dreams" was his biggest hit in Germany (#13) and also reached #1 on Canada Dance Chart in 1994.

Bassheads

Bassheads was a British house duo from Wirral and consisted of Nick Murphy and Eamonn Anthony Deery (Desa). The group had a big European hit with "Is There Anybody Out There?" Subsequent singles "Back To The Old School" (UK chart position, Number 12) and "Who Can Make You Feel Good" (UK chart position, Number 38) followed in the same style of their pulsating house/sample work. They also remixed tracks for Oceanic, Björk and Visage.

Nick Murphy contiues to produce and perform music. He has released recordings under the alias of "Angel" and more recently been involved in film score/ambient work.
Desa Bassheads went on to record a duet for EMI records with Garry Christian (The Christians) an up-dated version of the George Harrison classic "My Sweet Lord" in February 2008.

Barbara Tucker

Barbara Tucker is an American soul, dance and house music singer. She is best known for the 90s dance hits, "Beautiful People", "I Get Lifted", "Stay Together" and "Everybody dance". All reached #1 on US Hot Dance Club Songs chart.
Hailing from New York, Tucker found her voice from her love for singing in Church. Along with prolific dance music career, she has backing vocal credits ranging from George Clinton to Deee-Lite. Tucker also acts and choreographes notably with C&C Music Factory, Soul System, Jay Williams and Deee-Lite.

What happened next?
Barbara Tucker has since added 4 more US dance chart #1s to her collection. At time of writing, she has 8. "Stop playing with my mind" in 2000 (also reached #17 on the UK chart) was her fifth dance chart #1. She teamed up with Blaze on "Most precious love" in 2005. The Freemasons remix reached #17 on the UK chart, a year later. "Love Vibrations" (2007) and a cover of Lyn Collins' "Think (about it)" (2018) complete her collection of US Dance #1s. In December 2016, Billboard magazine ranked her as the 63rd most successful dance artist of all-time (arguably should be higher now). Tucker is the only recording artist to have had a yearly residency in Ibiza.

Bamboo

Bamboo was an English disco house project created by Andrew "Doc" Livingstone (member of Hed Boys) and Erin Lordan. They are best known for the 1998 dance hit, "Bamboogie", which heavily sampled KC and the sunshine band's "Get down tonight".

All Seeing I

All Seeing I were an English electronic music group from Sheffield comprising Dean Honer, Jason Buckle and DJ Parrot. They are best known for their debut single, "The Beat Goes On", which spent 1 week at #1 on the UK Dance Chart and revamped the Buddy Rich version. Oddly, their other 2 UK Top 40 hits, Walk like a Panther" (with Tony Christie) and "1st man in space" (with Phil Oakley) charted higher.

What happened next?
All seeing I did not see past 2000. Dean Honer went on to front the similarly styled group, I Monster and Moon Landingz.
Buckle went on to be a part-time member of Fat Truckers and formed Relaxed Muscle with Jarvis Cocker. He also has a brief cameo as one of the Wyrd Sisters rock band in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, along with Cocker, Pulp's Steve Mackey, Steve Claydon of Add N to (X), and Phil Selway and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.
Barratt was part of the duo Sweet Exorcist with Richard H. Kirk (of Cabaret Voltaire fame).

Atlantic Ocean

Atlantic Ocean were a Dutch house/trance outfit consisting of producer Lex van Coeverden (June 17) and Rene Van Der Weyde. They are best known for the various mixes of "Waterfall".

Last known release was "Poekauw/The Realm" in 2006. van Coeverden went on open a vinyl cutting and mastering room in 2005. van Coeverden still maintains Dance International Records.

Apollo 440

Apollo 440 is an English electronic music group formed in Liverpool in 1990. The name came from the Greek god, Apollo and the frequency of concert pitch, the A note at 440 Hz, often denoted as "A440", and the Sequential Circuits sampler/sequencer, the Studio 440. The group was known for recording, remixing and collaborating a number of artists. They remixed as remixed as Apollo 440 and as ambient cinematic alter-ego Stealth Sonic Orchestra, and created music for film, television, advertisements and multimedia. Their biggest UK hit was the reworking of "Lost in Space" (UK#4 1998) for the movie of the same name. "Ain't talkin' 'bout dub" heavily sampled Van Halen's "Ain't talkin' 'bout love" from 1978 and that reached the UK top 10. In the 90s, they notched ten top-40 UK singles.

Ann Lee

Annerley Gordon (better known as Ann Lee) is an English born (Nov 12) vocalist who is best known for the UK#2 hit, "2 times". She is also credited for contributing to the composition of Corona's "Rhythm of the night".

All Saints

All Saints (formerly All Saints 1975) is an English girl pop group consisting of Mel Blatt (Mar 25), Shaznay Lewis (Oct 14) and sisters, Natalie (May 14) and Nicole Appleton (Dec 17). Their are best known for a string of hits from their self-titled debut album. Their 1997 debut single, "I Know Where It's At" reached the top 5 in the UK and was #1 on the Canada Dance chart, the following year. Three successive UK chart-toppers followed with "Never Ever", "Under the bridge/Lady Marmalade" and "Bootie Call".

All Saints continued their success with two more UK#1 hits with "Pure Shores" and "Black Coffee". The former was taken from the Leonardo Di Capirio movie, "The Beach". Their last UK Top 10 hit was "Rock Steady" (UK#3 2006). Their last album was "Testament" in 2018. All Saints recently collaborated with Sting on the rework of "Message in a bottle".

Air

AirAir is a French electronic and rock duo formed in 1995, consisting of Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin (The band's name is not an acronym). They had 3 UK Top 30 hits in 1998.

What happened next?
In 2000, Air composed the score for Sofia Coppola's debut film, "The Virgin Suicides". They had one more UK Top 40 hit with the aptly named "Radio #1" (UK#31). The album from whick it was taken from, "10000 HZ Legend" was recently reissued to celebrate 20 years of the original release.

808 State

808 State is an English techno outfit formed in 1988 with founders underground record store owner Martin Price and producer Graham Massey. Gerald Simpson was initial member but left in 1989 to follow his own project, "A guy called Gerald". DJ duo Spinmasters (Andrew Barker and Darren Partington) joined and had success with "Pacific".
Into the 1990s, They collaborated with rapper MC Tunes to have top 20 hits, "Only rhyme that bites" and "Tunes splits the atom". Two more top 10 followed with "Cubik / Olympic" and "In yer face". Olympic was used as theme to the TV show, "The Word". Amongst other collaborations was one with UB40 on "One in ten" in 1992.
Pacific and Cubik were remixed in 1998 and reached #1 on the UK Dance chart.

808 State continue as a duo from the originating founders, most recently remixing the Art of Noise on "Moments in Love". Former member, Barker passed away in November 2021.

49ers

49ers were an Italian house and Eurodance act featuring producers and DJs Gianfranco Bortolotti, Luca Cittadini, Diego Leoni and Pieradis Rossini with vocalist Ann-Marie Smith. They were named after the San Francisco American Football Team. (Also not to be confused with the US hip-hop outfit of the same name)
They are best known "Touch me" and "Don't you love me", which both spent 2 weeks at #1 on US Billboard Dance chart. "Touch me" heavily sampled Alisha Warren's "Touch me" and actually released in UK (Europe) in December 1989 where it peaked at #3 but was in the top 40 for a while at the start of 1990. It also spent 5 weeks at #1 on top of the Canada Dance chart in April 1990.

What happened next?
49ers released four more singles including "Lovin' You", "Baby I'm Yours", "I Got The Music" and "Let The Sunshine In" before disbanding in 1998. In 2010, 49ers briefly returned with a single entitled "Je Cherche Apres Titine", which featured samples from Charlie Chaplin's comedy film "Modern Times" from 1936. In 2013, 49ers released a song called "Shine on in love" with a singer Cheryl Porter.

2 Eivissa

Despite their name being Catalan for Ibiza, 2 Eivissa was in fact a German dance outfit manufactured by Team 33. Fronting the project was Terri B (Terri Green) and Jobel (Josephine Hiebel/Lian Ross). The project were for the Gypsy Woman sampled "Oh la la la".

2 Eivissa's last known release was with El Tapo on "Allez Allez! Je Veux Que Vous Dansez" in 2016. Terri B has been recording prolificly particularly from 2005 onwards. She presents the HouseCrunch Radio Show guesting a variety of DJs. Lian Ross also still records and her last single was with Fancy on "Summer Wine".

187 Lockdown

187 Lockdown was the speed garage project created the English production duo of Danny Harrison and Julian Jonah. They are best known for the debut hit, "Gunman" and the UK Top 10 hit, "Kung Fu". Both songs hit the #1 spot on the UK Dance Chart. The project also created numerous mixes for the likes of Louise, Robbie Williams and The Shamen

What happened next?
187 Lockdown project was revived briefly in 2007 with a couple of remixes for the All around label. In 2002, the duo as M Factor had UK Top 20 hit with "Mother". After M Factor, Harrison went on become part of remix outfit Moto Blanco. Jonah still continues to work as a producer.
