Duran Duran

Duran Duran are an English pop, new wave, and synth pop group founded in 1978. They are comprised of John Taylor, Nicholas James Bates, Roger Taylor, Simon Le Bon. They have sold over 100 million records. Their name came from a character from the movie, the Jane Fonda movie, "Barbarella." They finally had a hit with their tribute, "Electric Barbarella" in 1999.
In the 1990s, their biggest hit was "Ordinary World", their only UK Top 10 hit. It reached #3 on the US singles and #1 on the Canada singles charts.

Dubstar

Dubstar are a British synth pop/dream pop band formed in 1992 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne by Chris Wilkie and Steve Hillier. Vocalist Sarah Blackwood joined the group in 1993. They are best known for the two UK Top 20 hits, "Not so manic now" and "Stars" in 1996.

Dreem Teem

Dreem Teem is a UK garage collective comprised of Timmi Magic, Mikee B and DJ Spoony. As DJ/Producers, they played worldwide and had success releasing numerous club anthems, plus several mainstream hits. The trio originally met on pirate station London Underground FM, but together as The Dreem Teem they went on to host shows on Kiss FM, Galaxy Radio and their Sony Radio Award winning sunday morning breakfast show on BBC Radio 1. The remix of "Buddy X" with Neneh Cherry reached the top of the UK dance chart in November 1999.

D:Ream

D:Ream are a house/pop duo Pete Cunnah and Al McKenzie met in London in 1991. They are best known for the hit "Things Can Only Get Better", which was at UK#1 for 4 weeks. They had 2 other top 10 hits with "U R The Best Thing" and "Shoot Me With Your Love". "U r the best thing" spent 1 week at #1 on US Dance Chart in July 1993. They achieved a total of 12 Top 40 hits.

What happened next?
D:Ream only released two albums before breaking up. They did reunite in 2008 and their last activity was playing support for Wheatus at a festival in Suffolk in 2012. In 1997, "Things can only get better" was used as the theme tune for Tony Blair's Labour Party election campaign in the UK and represented their last chart hit (as a re-issue). Their keyboardist, Brian Cox went on to become a physics professor and science broadcaster often on the BBC.

Dr Alban

Alban Uzoma Nwapa, better known by his stage name Dr Alban, is a Nigerian-Swedish born (Aug 26) Eurodance/hip-hop reggae singer and producer with his own record label, Dr. Records. He is best known for his UK#2 hit, "It's my life". He also had another UK top 20 hit with "Sing Hallelujah."

What happened next?

Double 99

Double 99 is the UK production duo of Tim Liken (who has charted as Tim Deluxe) and Omar Adimora. They also go by the name of RIP Productions. They are best known for the UK Dance #1 hit "Ripgroove".

Doolally/Shanks & Bigfoot

Doolally was a monkier created by the English duo of UK garage producers Steven Meade and Danny Langsman. As doolally, they had success with "Straight from the Heart" when it was released twice in 1998 and 1999. Each time reaching the topspot on the UK Dance chart. Second time around it reached the UK Top 10. However, due to legal reasons the duo could no longer release material under the Doolally name, they were forced to change. They went with the Shanks and Bigfoot moniker and they reached the top of the UK chart in May 1999 and spent 2 weeks there. It was also a UK dance #1. Both of the above songs were sung by Sharon Woolf.

What happened next?
At the annual MOBO Awards in 1999, Shanks & Bigfoot received three nominations and won one, for Best British Dance Act, beating out Fatboy Slim, Armand van Helden and Phats & Small. Additionally, they were nominated for two Ivor Novello Awards and two BRITs. A bidding war for Shanks & Bigfoot soon resulted, with the duo eventually signing to Zomba Records. They were also in hot demand as songwriters, with Britney Spears asking them to write for her, as well as Beyoncé and Destiny's Child reporting in the now-defunct Ministry magazine, that they loved the record and had taken copies of "Sweet Like Chocolate" back to the US where it was never released. However, it would later show up in a compilation album that was released Stateside by Epic in 2001. In 2000, the follow-up, "Sing-a-long" reached #12 on the UK chart.

Donna Summer

Donna Adrian Sudano better known as Donna Summer was an American born (Dec 31) singer and was also known as the "Queen of Disco". In the 1990s, she had a UK Dance #1 hit with "Melody of Love" in 1994. This was also a US Dance #1 in 1995. Her biggest 90s hit in the UK was the re-issue of "I feel love", which was also a UK Dance #1 in 1995. "I will go with you (con te partiro)" and "Love is the healer" were both US Dance #1s in 1999.

What happened next?
Donna Summer tragically died of cancer on May 17, 2012. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 as a performer. In December 2016, Billboard magazine listed Donna Summer 6th among the 100 Top Dance Club Artists of All Time.

DNA

DNA was the pseudonym taken by two British dance music producers Nick Batt and Neal Slateford, best known for issuing a remix of Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" in 1990. The song spent 3 weeks at #2 in the UK denied by both "Turtle Power" and "Itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini."

D-Mob

Daniel Kwadwo Addai Poku better known as Dancin' Danny D was the creator of D Mob. He was a British DJ, producer and remixer of Ghanian descent. He helped bring Acid House to the masses via his D Mob project's hit "We Call It Acieed", and released a variety of singles under the names DSM and the Taurus Boyz. He also did production work for the likes of Cathy Dennis, Chaka Khan and The Cookie Crew.
The UK hits "C'mon and Get My Love" and "That's the Way of the World" (from 1989) were both US Dance #1 hits in 1990.

DJ Sakin

Sakin Bozkurt better known as DJ Sakin is a Turkish-German born (Aug 2) trance/techno music producer. His background was in the German techno scene, playing in the same clubs as Michael Munzing (Snap), Taucher and Mark Spoon. Sakin is best known with his friends and for the song "Protect your mind (for the love of a princess)," which spent 1 week at #1 on UK Dance Chart in February 1999. It reached #4 in the UK and #3 in Germany. Torsten Stenzel was a producer in the friends project and Janet Taylor sang the vocals on and appeared in the videos for all the tracks for DJ Sakin & Friends. There were numerous remixes of this including ones by Van Bellen and Ayla. The follow-up "Nomansland" made the top 20 in the UK.

What happened next?
DJ Sakin has had collaborations with a variety of vocalists and artists as diverse as Vanessa Mae. Most recently, he contributed a couple of tracks, "Dirty Dancing" (not that one) with Nadja Benaissa and "Too much rain" to the "Planet Love Classics 2.0" in 2020.
Janet Taylor also sang vocals on some tracks for Taucher, York, DJ Mind-X, Diver & Ace. Her most recent release was "24 hours/Help me a lifetime" at the end of 2020.

DJ Quicksilver / Mark Van Dale

Orhan Terzi better known as DJ Quicksilver is a German-Turkish born (June 28) producer and DJ. He mostly produced together with Tommaso De Donatis whom he met in DJ Quicksilver's Bochum record store. His style can be summed up as uplifting trance. He is best known for the track "Belissima", which spent 1 week at #1 on UK Dance Chart in April 1997. DJ Quicksilver has made numerous remixes of a number of songs. One of his best was Mark Van Dale's "Water Verve".

What happened next?

Dina Carroll

Geraldine Carroll, better known as Dina Carroll is English born (Aug 21) singer of Scottish and African American descent who at 16 was signed to London dance music label Streetwave. On moving to West London in the mid-1980s she recorded two singles, "One Nation / Set It Off" and "(Solution To) The Problem" (uncredited, all credited to a nonexistent group called Masquerade).
She came to prominence as a featured artist with Quartz on the Carole King song "It's too late" when it reached the top 10 in the UK. Upon solo release, she scored a further 9 top 40 hits between 1991 and 1993. Her last couple of hits were her biggest with "Don't be a stranger" and "The perfect year" reaching the Top 5. She had another top 3 with "Escaping" in 1996.

What happened next?
2001 briefly saw a revitalised Dina, with a new single and a greatest hits compilation released in the spring and the summer respectively. Carroll's cover version of Van Morrison's "Someone Like You", featured in the "Bridget Jones's Diary" soundtrack reached number 38. This wasn't helped due to the fact that Van Morrison's version is actually heard in the movie and Dina's cover tracklisted on the OST CD, which had already been available for 2 months and topped the compilation album charts. Dina was featured on Planet Rock Profiles in 1995.

Digital Orgasm/Praga Khan

Digital Orgasm is a Belgian Techno act from the prolific M.N.O. production trio Maurice Engelen (Somora/Praga Khan), Nikkie van Lierop (Jade 4 U, Miss Lie) and Oliver Adams. Alongside Lords Of Acid and Channel X, Digital Orgasm was one of the longest lasting of their many projects. As Digital orgasm, their biggest hit was "Running out of time". As Praga Khan, the most recognisable track was "Inject with a poison".

Delirium

Not to be confused with 1970s Italian band, Delirium is a Canadian ambient electronica music group founded by Bill Leeb and Michael Balch and was a side project to "Front Line Assembly". Their first single was medlodic "Flowers become screens" (with vocalist Kristy Thirsk) from an album called "Semantic Spaces". But they had to wait until 1999 before they got some international recognition, when "Silence" their collaboration with Sarah McLachlan reached the top 10 in Australia and #1 in Ireland of all places.

What happened next?
"Silence" surprisingly failed to chart in the UK in 1999. But persistent paid of when a remix of "Silence" reached #3 in October 2000. In January 2005, Delirium performed at the One World benefit concert in Vancouver for the 2004 Asian tsunami, where "Silence" was performed live for the first time with Sarah McLachlan.

De La Soul

De La Soul is an American hip hop trio consisting of Plug 1 / Posdnuos (real name: Kelvin Mercer), Plug 2 /Trugoy (Dave Jolicoeur) and Plug 3 / Maseo (Vincent Mason). Nefore the 90s, they had a critically acclaimed debut album "3 feet high and rising", which included the hits "Me myself and I", "Say No Go", "Eye Know" and "The Magic Number".

Their biggest hit was "Ring Ring Ring", which reached the top 10 in the UK and #1 on the Swiss singles chart.

What happened next?
Recently, De La Soul created a kickstarter to help fund an album release. The goal was quickly reached and "And the Anonymous Nobody" was released in August 2016. The full-length album was preceded by 4 track EP "For Your Pain & Suffering" and the single "Pain", featuring Snoop Dogg. The album was nominated at the 59th Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album.
De La Soul was featured on the track "Momentz" on Gorillaz' 2017 album Humanz, on "Leap of Faith" by Mr. Jukes, alongside Horace Andy, and on Tom Misch's 2018 single "It Runs Through Me." A tenth studio album, featuring production contributions from Pete Rock and DJ Premier is in the works.

De'Lacy

De'Lacy was an American house music group consisting of percussionist De'Lacy Davis, bassist/keyboard Gary Griffin, drummer/backing vocalist Glenn Branch and lead vocalist Rainie Lassiter. They are best known for the song, "Hideaway" which spent 1 week at #1 on UK Dance Chart in September 1995.

What happened next?
De'Lacy disbanded towards the end of the 90s. In 2008, De'Lacy returned when connecting with songwriter and record producer Marco Gee. "Bodyswerve" was produced. The group continues to record with music producers in the UK and US. Davis has become activist against police brutality and educate those who have experienced resulting trauma. He wrote Black Cops Against Police Brutality: A Crisis Action Plan.

Deep Forest

Deep Forest is a French group originally consisting of Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez. They helped popularise the so-called "Global Pop" (World Music), ambient music combined with ethnic sounds. Their song "Sweet Lullaby" was their biggest hit.

What happened next?
Michel Sanchez and Eric Mouquet stopped working together after their 2004 soundtrack for the Japanese film 'Kusa No Ran'. In 2008, Eric released his own 'Deep' album under the name Deep Projects. Eric followed up with two more solo world fusion albums in 2013, Deep India and Deep Africa, which were released as 'Deep Forest Eric Mouquet'. Eric Mouquet has composed and produced for different artists including Josh Groban on "Closer" and "Awake". Michel Sanchez's last album was "The man and the machine" in 2015.

Deee-Lite

Deee-Lite was an American house and club/dance group comprising of Lady Miss Kier (Kier Kirby), Russian Super DJ Dmitry (Dmitry Brill) and Japanese Jungle DJ Towa Tei (Chung Dong-hwa). Together they are best known for "Groove is in the heart which spent 3 weeks at #1 on both the Canada and US dance chart. They also reached #2 in the UK in August 1990*.
There is a big asterisk here as Deee-Lite should have at least shared the #1 spot (Mid-week chart ITV chart show had them as #1. On 9th September 1990, they tied in sales with the official #1 Steve Miller Band's "The Joker". There was an odd ruling that gave the #1 to the song that increased its sales during the week. An unfair ruling for Deee-Lite because it didn't favour the more chart established song and because sales momentum was with the Steve Miller band, Deee-Lite were very unlikely to be #1 the following week. Mysteriously, 8 more copies were added to Steve Miller Band to attempt end the debate.
Deee-Lite were very successfully on the US Dance chart scoring a total of 6 #1s: "Power of Love" (January 1991), "Good Beat" (June 1991), "Runaway" (July 1992), "Bring me your love" (August 1994), "Call me" (February 1995).

What happened next?
For the third album, "Dewdrops In The Garden", Deee-Lite received little support from their label and due to creative differences Towa left the band and DJ Ani (real name: Ani Schempf) was enlisted. However, the album and tour, the band ultimately disbanded. Lady Miss Kier still performs but also write songs and DJs. She is very much a fashion icon and they have been nods from some fashion heavyweights including Thierry Mugler, Kenzo, Jeremy Scott, Elle, Vogue and Glamour. Towa is producing music and last know track was "Brand new emo" in 2017. He has also established his own creative company, hug inc, which, among other things, manufactures his trademark sunglasses. Brill worked with Julee Cruise (who herself had a hit with "Falling" in 1990) on the album, "Secret Life" in 2011.

Deborah Cox

Deborah Cox is a Canadian born (July 13) singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. She perhaps be best known for the songs "Sentimental" and "Who do u love" from her self-title debut album. The latter was her first US Dance #1 in March 1996. She have 3 more US Dance #1s with "Things just ain't the same" (1997), "Nobody's supposed to be here" (1998) and "It's over now" (1999).

What happened next?
Deborah Cox has had continued success especially on the US Dance chart where she has had no less than 13 #1 hits (up to 2020). In December 2016, Billboard magazine listed her the 22nd in the the 100 Top Dance Club Artists of All Time. Deborah Cox mixed recording music with theatre performance and the odd peice of acting. She has been in Broadway in "Aida", "Jeykll and Hyde", "The Bodyguard" and "Josephine". In February 2020, Cox starred opposite Roger Guenveur Smith in the BET+ television thriller Influence, an adaption of Carl Weber's same-tited 2018 novel, portraying a big-name celebrity singer accused of killing her husband. Also in 2020, she appeared as a guest host in an episode of Canada's Drag Race and started webseries titled COXtales with Deborah Cox during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Dawn Penn

Dawn Penn is a Jamaican reggae singer who is best known internationally for the 1994 hit "You Don't Love Me (No No No)" Dawn started her career recording rocksteady singles including "You don't love me" (1967). In 1992, she performed the song with Steely and Clevie on an anniversay show for Studio 1. From that, a new version was put together and the rest is history.

What happened next?
In 2011, Dawn Penn released a music video for the song "City Life", directed by Antoine Dixon-Bellot. On 30 June 2013, Penn performed "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" at the BET Awards. In 2014, The Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra released the single "Bangarang" featuring Penn on lead vocals, and she appeared in the official video to accompany the single. Penn joined the Ska Orchestra on stage to perform the track, on Halloween night 2013, at The Jazz Café in London's Camden Town. Penn also appeared with Thompson and backing singer Darren Fordham on Jools Holland's 2013/14 Hootenanny and again at the Glastonbury Festival in 2014. "You Don't Love Me (No No No)" has been sampled and covered by the many artists notably by Rihanna with Vybz Kartel on her 2005 album "Music of the Sun".

David Morales

David Morales is an American born (Aug 21) DJ, master mixer and record producer. He released a number of tracks in his own name with "Needin' u", which presented the face being his biggest hit in the UK. This made #1 on the dance charts in both UK (August) and USA (September) in 1998. His work with the Bad Yard Club earned them 2 US Dance #1s with "Gimme Luv (Eenie Meenie Miny Mo)" and "The Program" in 1993.

David Bowie

David Robert Jones (better known as David Bowie) is a legendary English born (Jan 8) pop/rock singer, musician, songwriter, and actor. In the 1990s, he probably best known for the song "Jump they say", which was the only top 10 in the UK amongst the 11 Top 40 hits he had. He collaborated with both Al B Sure on "Black tie white noise" and Lenny Kravitz on "Buddha of Suburbia".

What happened next?
David Bowie was inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. He continued to have critical success with the release of such albums as "Hours", "Heathen", "Reality", "The Next Day" and "Blackstar". His biggest single in this time was "Where are we now?" which reached UK#6 in 2013. David died of liver cancer in his New York City apartment, 10 January 2016.
On this sad day that Prince Philip, husband to the Queen of England passed away, it is interesting to note, Bowie decline a knighthood in 2003, considering it to be a waste of time.

Dario G

Dario G is the name of an English dance music project. The trio are Paul Spencer, Scott Rosser and Stephen Spencer (the Spencers are not related). The name came from then manager of Crewe Alexandra, Dario Gradi. They are best known for the 1997 UK #2 hit "Sunchyme" and World Cup 1998 inspired "Carnaval de Paris" (reached UK#5), which to this day is played at many sporting events. "Sunchyme" sampled Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town" and was US Dance #1 hit in June 1998.

What happened next?
Dario G had further hits with "Voices", "Dream to Me", "Carnival 2002" and the old Fiction Factory song "Heaven is closer (Feels like Heaven)." In September 2018, Dario G released "Cry". Paul Spencer is the only remaining member of the founding trio.

Daft Punk

Daft Punk are a French electronic music duo formed in Paris in 1993 by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. Guy and Thomas attended the same secondary school in Paris and were part of a group called Darlin'. When Darlin' disbanded in 1992. The duo formed Daft Punk. Their debut album, "Homework" spawned 2 UK Top 10 hits and dancefloor fillers with "Da Funk" and "Around the World". Both tracks reached #1 on the dance charts of Canada, UK and USA.

What happened next?
Daft Punk have had continued success over the years, their sophomore effort, "Discovery" had hits like "One More Time", "Aerodynamic", "Digital Love" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". All which have sampled and reused on a several songs (notably Kanye West's "Stronger"). The album was also featured in anime movie, "Interstella 5555". Daft Punk also did the soundtrack for "Tron: Legacy". In 2013, they had their biggest hit, "Get Lucky" with Pharrell Williams. In 2016, they worked with The Weeknd on "Starboy". On February 22, 2021, Daft Punk announced their split through this epilogue.

Curtis Stigers is an American born (Oct 18) jazz, sax player and pop singer who is best known for such songs as "I wonder why" and "You're all that matters to me", which both reached the UK Top 10 in 1992.

Culture Beat

Culture Beat is a German outfit that was originally created and produced by Torsten Fenslau and Peter Zweier. Torsten Fenslau passed away in 1993 and his brother Frank Fenslau decided to continue the project together with Peter Graber. Also Tania Evans took over vocal duties from original singer Lana E. With Evans and Jay Supreme, Culture Beat had the most successful period with "Mr. Vain", "Inside Out", "Take Me Away" and "Walk The Same Line". "Mr Vain" was their biggest hit as that spent 4 weeks at #1 in the UK singles chart in August 1993. It was one of three tracks that reached #1 on the Canada Dance chart as it spent 10 weeks there in 1993. The others being "Got to get it" (January 1994) and "Crying in the rain" (May 1996) (in part due to the Sweetbox funky remix). "Got to get it" was also #1 on the US Dance chart.

What happened next?
Tania Evans and Jay Supreme left Culture Beat in 1998 after change of direction from Eurodance to commercial pop. Kim Sanders became the vocalist in 1998 and was featured on the "Metamorphosis" album. Jackie Sangster (2001) and MC 4T (2003) joined Culture Beat and that is the current line-up. Menawhile, Tania Evans is still performing a few gigs including one at London's Indigo O2 in 2019.

Crystal Waters

Crystal Waters is a Philadelphia-born (Nov 19?) house and dance singer is best known for her debut hit, "Gypsy Woman", which reached #2 in the UK only denied by Cher's "Shoop shoop song". The song has had countless remixes (Tin Tin out mix being a personal fave) and been sampled so many times over the years. For example, a 1992 remix made the top 40 as a double-A side with a remix of Sabrina Johnston's 'Peace as fundraising single from the 'Red Hot And Dance' album for AIDS charities. "Gypsy Woman" spent 3 weeks as US (May 1991) and Canada (June 1991) Dance #1. She has been very popular on the dance scene, particularly in USA, where she had a total of 5 US Dance #1s with "Gypsy Woman", "Makin' Happy", "100% Pure Love", "What I need" and "Relax". In 1997, Crystal Waters recorded a track with all people, Dennis Rodman on "Just a freak", which on the soundtrack for the movie, "Double Team".

Crystal Waters continues to record to this day. She combined with Alex Gaudino to have big dance hit, "Destination Calabria". In December 2016, Billboard magazine listed her among the 100 Top Dance Club Artists of All Time (as the 52nd).

Crush

Crush were originally an English duo of Donna Air and Jayni Hoy. The group came from the British Children's drama, "Byker Grove". In fact, it started as a trio with Vicky Taylor in the group, which was called "Byker Grooove" before evolving into Crush. In the UK, Crush released "Jellyhead" and "Luv'd up" in 1996, both narrowly failing to reach the top 40. However, they were more successful abroad, reaching the top 40 in Australia in 1997. The pumphouse mix by Motiv8 pushed "Jellyhead" all the way to #1 on Canada Dance Chart where it spent 4 weeks on top in January 1997.

What happened next?
"Jellyhead" probably would and should have been re-released. However, Jayni Hoy left the duo and was replaced by Luciana Caporaso. Donna and Luciana went on an international tour promoting "Jellyhead". Jayni moved to Australia and pretty much been quiet ever since. Donna Air went on to be a presenter on MTV UK and the Big Breakfast. In recent times, Donna has taken part in a few reality shows such as "Splash!" and "Dancing on Ice".
Luciana had a couple of hits as a featured artist on Bodyrox's UK#2 hit "Yeah Yeah" (2006) and Super Mal's "Bigger than big" (2007). She is still recording and has a couple of US Dance #1s with "I'm still hot" (2011) and "Yeah Yeah (2017)".

Crash Test Dummies

Crash Test Dummies are Canadian Alternative Rock band founded in 1988 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They are comprised of lead singer Brad Roberts, Benjamin Darvill, Michel Dorge, Ellen Reid and Dan Roberts. They are best known in the UK for the song "Mmm mmm mmm mmm", which reached #2 in April 1994, foiled by Prince's "Most beautiful girl in the world".
