Not Known For Singing in the 90s Intro

Not Known For Singing in the 90s

Here is a look at all the acts that made the UK Top 40 in the 90s that were better known for doing other things such as sports and acting and not necessarily famed for their singing (or rapping).

In later posts, will run through the Top 40 acts that are #NotKnownForSinging.

We will start those acts that have not Top 40 for the simple reason of reaching UK top spot despite their not been known for music. Firstly, here's an example of an act that's known perhaps equally for singing and acting...

Vanessa Williams (Disqualified Again)

Vanessa Williams is an actress starring in such films as Eraser and Soul Food, and a fashion designer with her own clothing line, V launched in 2016. But arguably she is as well known for a pop career particularly in the States, where "Running back to you" was #1 on the R&B chart in 1991 and her duet with Brian McKnight, "Love is" reached #3. But it's her 1992 song "Save the best for the last" that gained international success, reaching #1 in Australia and Canada as well reaching #3 in the UK. Her music career is on a par with her acting career possibly greater so as consequence she is disqualified (again?) for not known for singing. Of course not the first time, she has been disqualified as she was forced to relinquish the title of Miss America 1984 after unauthorised nude photographs of her appeared in Penthouse. An apology for the events of 1984 was given a number of years after the event. Mind you, if I allowed her into the chart, she'd only be around #35 anyways, so the fact a special mention for being disqualified is probably good thing in the end.
