OnThisDay: July 7th

Back in 1991, Bryan Adams reached UK#1 with a little known song from the movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves". Little did we know "(Everything I do) I do it for you" would spend a record-breaking 16 weeks on top. He would also reach US#1 a few weeks later. In the meantime, Paula Abdul was holding on to US#1 for a 5th week with "Rush Rush". We forget how popular she was in the late 80s/early 90s as this was her 5th US#1. To date, she has had 6 US#1s all told. Back in 1996, Fugees achieved the novelty of bouncing back to UK#1 after previously spending 4 weeks on top with the old Roberta Flack hit "Killing me softly". Meanwhile back in the states, hip-hop outfit Bone Thugs'n'Harmony spent their 8th and final week as US#1 with "Tha Crossroads".

On this day 20 years ago, Wet Wet Wet were spending the their 6th week as UK#1 with the old Troggs song, "Love is all around" from the movie 4 weddings and a funeral. Meanwhile in the states, All-4-One made it 8 weeks as US#1 with their love song "I swear". Coincidently, All-4-One got to UK#2 with "I swear" and spent 7 weeks there. On this day 1995, The Outhere Brothers knocked off the Robson & Jerome version of "Unchained Melody" from the UK#1 spot with their 2nd consecutive UK#1 "Boom boom boom". Boom boom boom would spend 4 weeks as UK#1. Meanwhile stateside, TLC scored their 2nd US#1 with "Waterfalls" knocking off Bryan Adams and the Don Juan DeMarco song "Have you ever really loved a woman?". Waterfalls would spend 7 weeks as US#1.

On this day 1990, Elton John made it 3 weeks as UK#1 with the double A side of "Sacrifice" / "Healing Hands". This was Elton's 2nd ever UK#1. He had been waiting almost 14 years for a chart-topper since "Don't go breaking my heart" was UK#1 in 1976. Meanwhile stateside, boyband New Kids on the Block were spending a 2nd week as US#1 with "Step by step", which was their 3rd and presently last US#1.
